Ibogaine treatment

Today, Ibogaine treatment is considered an alternative method of detoxification and an integral procedure in drug addiction treatment, mainly in opioid addiction. Ibogaine affects receptors for two major neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine

These neurotransmitters are associated with feelings of happiness and self-confidence. Getting them back to the natural state of balance is the first step that leads to complete recovery, and that can be done through the use of Ibogaine treatment.

Ibogaine therapy brings the patient into a state where he is able to focus on the causes of addiction without passing through intense and stressful withdrawal symptoms that follow most types of opioid detoxification. Even if some of the remaining opiate symptoms continue to be present after Ibogaine treatment, they are drastically decreased and become quite bearable and easy to alleviate in the next 24 hours.

In this article, you will learn more details about the Ibogaine treatment, what makes this substance so useful in the fight against addiction, and what is the expected timeline and results for this procedure.

What is Ibogaine?

Ibogaine is a powerful psychedelic that is isolated from certain African plants from the Apocynaceae family and has hallucinogenic properties. It originated from Iboga root and is a natural alkaloid that has been used by tribes in Africa for spiritual and tribal rituals for centuries. While Ibogaine began as a spiritual medicine of the indigenous peoples of Africa, it was quite accidentally proven to be a good ally in the battlefield of treating opiate addiction, especially heroin. Its remarkable properties against opiate addiction were discovered by accident when H. Lotsof took Ibogaine in 1962 and the following morning revealed that he had no desire for drugs.

Since then, Ibogaine has been known as a substance that has helped many individuals in their battle against addiction.

Numerous studies and scientific research has been performed on Ibogaine, and these serve as extremely convincing evidence that Ibogaine can significantly relieve the abstinence crisis symptoms in almost all drug addiction cases.

How does Ibogaine work and is this procedure safe?

At the physical level, Ibogaine has the ability to completely reset the brain. People become addicted to drugs when they rely on them to fill in chemical receptors in the brain. The body gets so used to these chemicals that it stops producing them naturally. When an addict tries to stop using drugs, he remains without that abundance of chemicals and begins to experience intense physical pain and discomfort.

The process of chemical synaptic transmission.

Ibogaine binds to these receptors and normalizes their function. This restores the chemical balance to natural levels and can restore the function of neurotransmitters damaged due to drug use. As a therapy, Ibogaine can achieve these results in a few hours.

The properties of Ibogaine to act as an opioid antagonist can be explained by the effects of its transient metabolite called Noribogaine. Noribogaine increases the level of dopamine and serotonin in the body that give the patient a sense of well-being and block the brain’s receptors for drug craving. Ibogaine is not a part of substitution therapy, and it does not cause addiction. Ibogaine chemically prevents the organism from becoming addicted to drugs. The main task of Ibogaine therapy at VIP Vorobjev Clinic is to provide safe and painless detoxification of opioids while eliminating the desire for drugs.

When monitored by medical staff, the Ibogaine treatment is a perfectly safe procedure, and the patient’s vital signs are checked throughout the whole length of this process. This substance causes no addiction by itself, which separates it from the traditional substitutional therapies that were in use for many years previously. Because of that, Ibogaine is not only the most effective procedure for addiction treatment, it is also one of the safest options as well.

Psychological benefits of Ibogaine

As a psychoactive substance, Ibogaine produces a state similar to a dream that moves the level of self-awareness without precedent. Many people describe that in this condition, they were able to get a real understanding of their lives for the first time. This clarity occurs due to the Ibogaine influences, and it changes the entire life perspective of addicts. Addicts have reported multiple psychological benefits from their experiences with Ibogaine.

This evokes a sense of security and gives the patient the strength to tackle the main problem of the disorder, which is the mental addiction. Solving psychological causes in addiction is as important as dealing with physical symptoms. Ibogaine has the potential to treat both.

Ibogaine treatment phases

Considering that it is necessary to make preparations for the procedure with Ibogaine, the treatment lasts for 5 days, and the procedure itself with the most intensive effect lasts for about 6 hours, although the Ibogaine effect is felt in a milder form over the subsequent few days.

Diagnostics is a preliminary phase of treatment. The essence of the diagnostic is to assess the physical and psychological condition of the patient. A standard diagnostic examination includes medical tests, ECG, internist examination, etc.

It also includes psychological tests that determine the level of addiction, the extent of the effect that the psychoactive substances left on mental health, whether there are signs of mental disorders or depression, what the degree of motivation for healing is, the level of self-criticism, and so on.

1. Treatment plan

After diagnostics, the results are observed by a team of physicians who develop a treatment strategy. If tests reveal more serious deviations, the presence of a risk factor, or the patient has accompanying chronic illnesses, additional tests are organized as required, and a therapy for the accompanying illness is prescribed.

Depending on the problem, additional analysis and medical consultations can be performed.

2. Preparing for a session

One day before the session, through special psychological tests, information about the patient and about his life is collected, and based on the psychological state and physical characteristics of the patient, the doctor determines the exact dose of Ibogaine to be administered.

3. Mental mapping

In order for the session to yield the best results and in order to influence the subconsciousness of the patient, we must know both the good and the bad things from his past, the people he loves and for which he would like to return to a healthy life, all the ugly things that happened to him because of the use of drugs, whether he is aware of the consequences of using drugs, and what his greatest motivation is.

4. Ibogaine therapy

All patients who have been treated with Ibogaine at our clinic say that it is the most intense experience in their life. The Ibogaine session takes place under constant medical supervision, and the patient is connected to a monitoring system that tracks the pulse and heart rate. Only the natural Ibogaine, pure hydrochloride, is used.

Ibogaine comes in capsule form, and it can only be used under strict medical supervision. The first dose is minor in order to test the patient’s reaction to the medication. This is performed as a precaution to exclude the possibility of an allergic reaction.

While the treatment lasts for 24 hours, the biggest effects are felt during the first 6-8 hours. The effects of the medication start within 45 minutes of application. Under the influence of Ibogaine, patients enter into a hallucinogenic state. Roughly 15-20% of the consumers do not experience these effects, but in 100% of the cases, Ibogaine helps the patients to reach an altered state of mind, where they become motivated to leave their addiction in the past.

At our clinic, no one has ever reported negative consequences of Ibogaine sessions, which can happen if patients privately buy Ibogaine and try to detox on their own or in the presence of a medically untrained person. In that case, it can be very dangerous, because the body has not been previously cleansed of the substance; tachycardia and other risks can arise during the session.

While the effects of Ibogaine are occurring, the first stage of treatment takes place, where patients see their illness for the first time in a realistic way, as if they are critically observing themselves. Some patients have visual experiences and some only reflect a lot. The session usually lasts about six hours, and it is divided into three stages.

During the second stage, patients see their life from their second year to the present. They go through a series of various emotional states, they feel the guilt for those loved ones they hurt, the fear of illness and the consequences of addiction, and some even see their own death.

And what follows here is a reversal. This third stage where, with the help of our experts, doctors and psychologists, a patient succeeds in getting the strength to leave the addiction in the past, to separate the good from the bad, realize how valuable life itself is, and what the right values to fight for are. We help a patient realize that he or she is still capable of living like every normal person and that the drug was a mistake in their life that could happen to anybody, and it brought them to this terrible addictive disorder. After the session, patients feel different, new, and reborn.

5. Evaluation of the results

At the end of the treatment, the achieved results are evaluated. The physical and psychological state of a patient becomes stable. Preparations are made for the discharge from the hospital, and patients and their relatives are given instructions for how to behave in the future. Together with the patient, our team of experts devises a plan of activities for the following month and provides advice for successful rehabilitation and resocialization.

6. Outpatient treatment

Patients remain in contact with our doctors for the next 12 months so that we are able to monitor their situation, help in difficult moments, correct the after-discharge therapy if necessary, and help them maintain a stable abstinence. For this period, patients are prescribed a certain medication therapy and psychotherapy at their place of residence as it has been shown to have significantly affected the keeping of treatment results. For twelve months, outpatient treatment and follow-ups are free of charge.

In the case of a change in the condition (depression, anxiety, repeated desire for drugs), a patient needs to notify the hospital in order for the doctors to determine the further course of treatment. Contact between patient and doctor can be achieved via email, Skype, or phone. The outpatient treatment is planned to last at least one year as this period is considered sufficient for the patient to become accustomed to a new lifestyle and for the receptors to regenerate and allow them to build the necessary confidence to leave the addiction in the past.
